Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation

A BID Plymouth staff member is helping a cardiac rehab patient. The outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program at Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth has been awarded program certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). The rehabilitation program helps patients recover from cardiac events such as a heart attack or bypass surgery, to reach their maximum physical and emotional potential. Through education, exercise, counseling and support, our caring and experienced staff helps patients and their families to cope with the demands and challenges of cardiac disease.

Patients and families are educated formally and informally on topics ranging from heart disease, stress management and health behavior changes, to dietary management, weight control and smoking cessation.  Every effort is made to accommodate scheduling needs and videotapes are available to loan to family members who are unable to attend an outpatient session.

The patient and the cardiac rehab staff, in cooperation with the attending physician, develop a personalized treatment plan for each participant.  The supervised exercise program consists of warm-up, aerobic exercise and cool-down.

Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

The Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth helps patients with chronic lung disease such as emphysema, bronchitis or asthma, to increase their activity level, control shortness of breath and improve their overall quality of life. Through education, exercise, counseling and support, our caring and experienced staff helps patients and families learn coping strategies for living with chronic lung disease.

Patients and families participate in individual and group educational sessions designed to optimize physical and social activity and autonomy. Education topics range from anatomy and physiology, to medications and stress management. Every effort is made to accommodate the scheduling needs of the patient and the family.

Exercise is designed for the person who is limited by shortness of breath.  The program incorporates flexibility, strengthening and aerobic endurance.  The three-phase process begins while the patient is still in the hospital.  Patients and their families are given basic education and the patient receives progressive exercise as tolerated.  The second phase begins soon after the patient leaves the hospital.  Patients and families are offered educational and emotional support, as well as monitored exercise geared toward a gradual return to optimal function.  The third phase is a maintenance stage that focuses on continued healthy living.

A cardiac nurse, exercise physiologist and respiratory therapist are present during the exercise sessions with a physician immediately available
